Disposal Instructions for ezSample Snap Vials

How do I properly dispose of ezSample Snap Vials?

The best disposal plan for ezSample Snap Vials:

  1. Collect all used vials gently placed in a disposal container or bucket to be worked with in your chemical storage room.
  2. Wrap the used vials in paper towels and use a spoon or metal spatula to break the tip of the vial a little further down to where the vial starts to spread out to the width of the vial.  Collect the liquid contents of the vial into a beaker using a blotting technique, rinse the emptied vial once, also into the beaker and place the total liquid volume in a hood or vented place to help dry out the water over several days. Dispose of the broken vials in a broken glass container.
  3. Once water is evaporated, or at least greatly reduced, scrape condensed or dry ingredients for chemical disposal into a high density polyethylene plastic container with lid and label the bottle with chemicals used from the MSDS sheet that the kit was shipped with.
  4. Collect these materials with any other non disposable chemical waste generated by your science department for professional removal.  This will reduce the volume of materials needing disposal by 100 fold.  The chemicals used are the standard recommended materials for water quality determination by the USGS.

We do not recommend dumping the solutions down the drain. The above procedure will result in a lower cost, environmentally sound and reduced risk way of getting rid of materials much like any agency should use to get rid of paints, cleaners or other harsh chemicals around the business or school.
