Hour of Code, Coding on Mobile Devices

Computer Science Education Week is here, and the PASCO team is ready to help your students get coding! This week on PASCO Live, we're demonstrating a simple coding activity that students can perform without any prior coding experience. We'll be using an onboard accelerometer sensor and the free SPARKvue app with built-in Blockly coding to create a simple, data-driven program. This is a quick and simple activity that can be completed using a smartphone or tablet with an onboard accelerometer, making it the perfect Hour of Code activity for hybrid and distance learners.

At-Home Science Labs for Students

Many labs and activities designed for distance learning fail to provide the same content and engagement as traditional science labs. On this week's PASCO Live, Dr. JP Keener will share our all-in-one solution for delivering authentic, standards-based labs to your hybrid or distance learners. These resources are affordable, effective, and simple to implement into any introductory chemistry or physics course. Plus, every solution is designed to save you time, allowing you to share and assign key lab videos with just a few simple clicks.

GIS Day

This week, we're highlighting GIS Day with a few student-friendly GIS activities. Our in-house expert, Roger Palmer, will share how you can use SPARKvue and a Wireless Weather Sensor to conduct investigations in local air quality, weather and more. Whether you take the class outdoors or share the data and story with students, these GIS activities can help you engage the class with data collected from your own local environment.

Exploring Life Under a Microscope

When it comes to teaching biology, visual resources can make all the difference. Whether you’re studying mitosis, plant and animal cells, or macro-invertebrates from a local water source, microscopy investigations are the easiest way for students to connect with the cellular world. This week on PASCO Live, we will be performing student-friendly microscopy investigations. We’ll review how to use a microscope, compare plant and animal cells, look at the stages of cell reproduction, and discuss the microcosm of organisms that can be found in almost any backyard, pond or garden!

PASCO: Halloween Edition

Looking to add some Halloween fun to your chemistry course? In this special edition of PASCO Live, we’re putting a spooky spin on classic chemistry demonstrations. With connections to relevant chemistry phenomena, these engaging demos are a great way to infuse a little holiday fun into your middle school or high school course. Join us to celebrate Halloween the only way we know how - with sensors and spooky science!

Mole Day Demos

What is a mole? Celebrate Mole Day with the PASCO team as they perform live demonstrations and an exciting experiment that can be used to answer every chemistry student's classic question, "What is a mole?" Join educators, Barbara Pugliese and Roger Palmer, for student-friendly mole demos and an experiment that you can leverage in your own chemistry course to improve student understanding.

Plant Pigment Chromatography and Spectroscopy

This week on PASCO Live, we're getting into the Fall spirit with demonstrations in leaf pigment chromatography and spectroscopy. In the first demonstration, we'll present a simple chromatography experiment that students can perform at home or in school using leaves, Isopropyl Alcohol and filter paper. Then, Dr. Keener will demonstrate a quick and easy way to investigate the concentration of Chlorophyll in olive oil. Lastly, we'll use the Wireless Spectrometer to investigate the absorption spectrum of various leaf pigments. Join us to celebrate Fall PASCO style - with science!

Sharing Educator Experiences with Distance Learning

The pandemic has dramatically changed the way educators teach, grade and interact with their students. What once were reliable best practices and hands-on activities in the classroom, have become incompatible with hybrid and distance learning models. On this week's PASCO Live, Georgia educator, Shane K., will join Dr. JP Keener to discuss how his district pivoted in response to distance learning. A high school chemistry teacher and educator at the University of West Georgia, Shane thought he'd seen it all during his 28 years of teaching. Now, he's joining us from Fayette County, Georgia, to share his experiences with distance learning.
