Tech Note 675 Detail

Silent Network Installation of DataStudio

Affected Products:

CI-6870 NOT A VALID PART NUMBER

Problem/Symptom:
How do I perform a silent network installation of DataStudio?

PASCO Solution:

This tech note was designed for network administrators who wish to automate the installation of DataStudio.

The DataStudio installer was created using InstallShield. Although there is a DataStudio msi file, it is not possible to do a complete installation with this file. If you were to run the DataStudio msi with switches (msiexec.exe /i "C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Installations\{32BE15CD-DF33-4143-A903-A08FA1C76787}\DataStudio.msi" /quiet) as recommended by the Microsoft msi installer code note, you would get an error that the setup file must be executed instead. This is because the setup file is packaged. Fortunately, the installer executable (DataStudio198r10.exe) will pass installation switches to the InstallShield Setup.exe file; therefore, you can use the installation with Installshield switches.

A silent installation is an installation that does not require user input to complete once it is started, which may be useful if you have to install DataStudio on many computers. To create a silent installation for DataStudio:

Creating a Silent Installation on Windows XP

  1. Create a setup script.
    1. Download the DataStudio installer to the root of your "C" drive.
    2. Click on the Windows Start button and select "Run".
    3. Type "c:/DS198r10.exe -r" and click OK. (The installer will run in record mode. The "-r" switch forces the installer to create an installation script setup.iss in the Windows directory).
    4. Make all of the installation selections that you want to happen on the host computer.
  2. Silently install on the host computer.
    1. Copy both setup.iss and the DataStudio installer (DS198r10.exe) to the root directory of host computer where you would like to install DataStudio. (The two files must be in the same directory path.)
    2. Click on the Windows Start button and select Run.
    3. Type "c:/DS198r10.exe -s". (The installer will silently install with all of the choices that you made.)

Creating a Silent Installation on Windows 7

  1. Create a setup script.
    1. Download the DataStudio installer to the root of your "C" drive.
      1. Click Start.

      2. In the Start Search box, type cmd, and then press CTRL+SHIFT+ENTER.

      3. If the User Account Control dialog box appears, confirm that the action it displays is what you want, and then click Continue.

    2. Type "c:/DS198r10.exe -r" and click OK. (The installer will run in record mode. The "-r" switch forces the installer to create an installation script setup.iss in the Windows directory).
      1. Click Start.

      2. In the Start Search box, type cmd, and then press CTRL+SHIFT+ENTER.

      3. If the User Account Control dialog box appears, confirm that the action it displays is what you want, and then click Continue.

    2. Type "c:/DS198r10.exe -s". (The installer will silently install with all of the choices that you made.)

32-Bit Windows Installation

To avoid retyping the DataStudio license key type the following open a simple text editor such as notepad and type the following information:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\PASCO scientific\DataStudio\SerialNumber]
@="8909"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\PASCO scientific\DataStudio\LicenseKey]
@="AVPLOPO-SHIAVMQ-ICVAWSP-QMXCFIL"

, where 8909 and AVPLOPO-SHIAVMQ-ICVAWSP-QMXCFIL are replaced with your serial number and key from your license. Save the file with a filename that has a ".reg" extension. Copy the file to the host computer and click on it to quickly enter the license information.

64-Bit Windows Installation

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\PASCO scientific\DataStudio\SerialNumber]
@="8909"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\PASCO scientific\DataStudio\LicenseKey]
@="AVPLOPO-SHIAVMQ-ICVAWSP-QMXCFIL"

, where 8909 and AVPLOPO-SHIAVMQ-ICVAWSP-QMXCFIL are replaced with your actual serial number and key from your license. Save the file with a filename that has a ".reg" extension. Copy the file to the host computer and click on it to quickly enter the license information.
(Additional InstallShield switches can be found here.)

Note: Whether you do a silent or manual installation of DataStudio, the software needs to be run once as an administrator.

Repackaging Tools

There are a variety of third-party repackaging tools available that can help administrators install customized software on multiple computers. See Microsoft's suggestions for repackaging applications. Below is a list of some of the most popular repackaging tools:

  1. Acresso (InstallShield) AdminStudio
  2. Altiris Wise Package Studio
You can generate a CustomAction for an MSI that will perform the driver installation silently. Capture the whole installation in WISE and remove the driver files/registry from all places except the “DataStudio\Driver” location.
  3. Novell ZenWorks
  4. AppDeploy Repackager
  5. InstallAware
