Salinity Calculation

Affected Products:

PS-2116 NOT A VALID PART NUMBER
CI-6739A 10x Conductivity Sensor

Problem/Symptom:
How do I calculate salinity from temperature and conductivity?

PASCO Solution:

PASCO now offers the PASPORT Salinity Sensor - PS-2195, which internally calculates salinity from conductivity and temperature.

If you already have discrete temperature and conductivity sensors, then you can also automatically calculate salinity in software from these measurements:

  1. Select the appropriate file for your computer or GLX in the Salinity folder
  2. If you will use a PS-2125 temperature sensor, then place a Teflon sensor cover Teflon sensor cover (10 Pack) over the stainless-steel shaft in order to prevent a ground loop from forming between the conductivity sensor and the temperature sensor.
  3. Place both the temperature and conductivity sensors in the solution.
  4. Tap the conductivity sensor under water to eliminate air bubbles between the electrodes.
  5. Start data recording and wait for the reading to stabilize.
