Xplorer Firmware Update Procedure

Affected Products:

PS-2000 Xplorer Datalogger

Problem/Symptom:
How do I update the firmware on my PS-2000 Xplorer?

PASCO Solution:

Using Capstone

  1. Download and install the current version of Capstone.
  2. Check that the batteries in the Xplorer have at least a 50% charge in them.
    1. Press the Display button on the Xplorer until you see the battery menu.
    2. Check that there are at least five stars in that menu.
  3. Unplug any sensors that are connected the Xplorer.
  4. If the Xplorer is plugged into the USB port, unplug it.
  5. Hold down the power button on the Xplorer until it powers off.
  6. Launch Capstone.
  7. Depress and hold the Display key (i.e., the key with the three boxes).
  8. Plug the Xplorer back into a USB port of the computer.
  9. When the Xplorer briefly displays the message Enter Boot Mode and beeps, release the Display key.
  10. When Capstone asks if you would like to upgrade the firmware, click Yes.

Using DataStudio

  1. Download and install the current version of DataStudio.
  2. Check that the batteries in the Xplorer have at least a 50% charge in them.
    1. Press the Display button on the Xplorer until you see the battery menu.
    2. Check that there are at least five stars in that menu.
  3. Unplug any sensors that are connected the Xplorer.
  4. If the Xplorer is plugged into the USB port, unplug it.
  5. Hold down the power button on the Xplorer until it powers off.
  6. Launch DataStudio.
  7. Of the four choices at DataStudio start-up, choose Create Experiment.
  8. Click the Setup button in the main toolbar of DataStudio, click Choose Interface..., and select PASPORT.
  9. Depress and hold the Display key (i.e., the key with the three boxes).
  10. Plug the Xplorer back into a USB port of the computer.
  11. When the Xplorer briefly displays the message Enter Boot Mode and beeps, release the Display key.
  12. When DataStudio asks if you would like to upgrade the firmware, click Yes.
  13. If DataStudio does not ask you to upgrade the firmware, quit the DataStudio program and then immediately run DataStudio again.

  15. If you still cannot update the firmware, connect the Xplorer to a different USB port or to a powered USB hub.
