How do I open a SPARKLab on a Chromebook?

Affected Products:

PS-2400 SPARKvue Site License
PS-2401 SPARKvue Single User License

Problem/Symptom:
I have a SPARKLab file (.spk or .spk2) and I want to load it onto a Chromebook for use.

PASCO Solution:

There are two methods to open a SPARKLab file (.spk or .spk2) in the free SPARKvue app on a Chromebook.

Method 1: Flash Drive

We have a short video demonstrating how to do this here: https://youtu.be/CWNff3HmilU

  1. Copy the SPARKLab file(s) onto a USB flash drive. You may need to do this on a PC or Mac computer.
  2. Attach the flash drive to your Chromebook's USB port
  3. Launch the SPARKvue app
  4. Select the Gear icon in the upper right
  5. Select Manage Files
  6. A file manager window will appear. Your flash drive will be on the lower left side underneath Downloads
  7. Select the desired File and pick Open in the lower right
  8. It will take you back to SPARKvue Manage Files. Select Open
  9. The file is placed in the SPARKLabs folder
  10. You can use the Move icon to place the file in the Saved Work folder
  11. Go back to the Home screen and select Saved Work to open your file for use

Method 2: Open from Cloud Storage via Online Storage Services

  1. Upload your SPARKLab file(s) to your Google Drive, OneDrive, Box, Dropbox, Evernote or FTP site. You may need to do this on a PC or Mac computer.
  2. Launch the SPARKvue app
  3. Select Online Storage Services from the SPARKvue Home Screen
  4. Select your cloud storage service from Step 1 and log in.
  5. After you are logged in, you will see a list of the available files. Select one
  6. Select the Upload button in the lower right corner
  7. A Filepicker.io progress window will appear
  8. When the download completes, you will see a picture of the title screen of the SPARKLab. Select the Open button underneath it
  9. You may see another progress bar while the lab loads

If any of these steps are freezing or timing out, it is possible that your school/IT firewall is blocking access to Filepicker. To check this, see if you can access www.filepicker.io from any web browser.
