Tech Note 1087 Detail

SPARK SLS will not charge.

Affected Products:

PS-2008 SPARK Science Learning System
PS-2008A SPARK Science Learning System

Problem/Symptom:
The SPARK Science Learning System will not charge.

PASCO Solution:

This may be the result of a charge controller in a bad logical state, a defective charge controller, a defective/expired battery, or, in the case of the charging station, poor electrical contact. If the SPARK will charge when connected to a power adapter, but not when connected to a PS-2570 SPARK Charging Station, see Tech Note 1137. Otherwise, please follow the troubleshooting procedure below:

  1. Connect the power adapter and turn on the SPARK SLS. Wait until the Home screen appears.

If the SPARK SLS will not power on, press the Reset button on the back and try to turn it on again. If the SPARK SLS still will not power on, open the battery case, and unplug the battery cable. If this resolves the problem, replace the PS-2569 battery; otherwise, email Teacher Support with the serial number of your SPARK SLS to have the unit repaired.

  1. Enter the hardware maintenance screen by performing the following steps:
    1. Hold down both buttons on the front of the SPARK SLS.
    2. Tap once on the bar at the top of the SPARK SLS screen.
    3. Release both buttons.
  2. If the charge is less than 95%, then the current should read 100 mA or greater. If the current reads 0 mA, reset the charge controller:
    1. Unplug the power adapter
    2. Unscrew the blue battery cover (to the right of the power button) with a #1 Phillips screw driver.
    3. Unplug the battery.
    4. Wait a couple of seconds for the charge controller to reset.
    5. Plug the battery connector back in.
    6. Replace the battery cover and replace the battery door screw.
    7. Reconnect the charger.
  3. Return to the SPARK SLS maintenance screen. If the current still reads 0 mA, replace the battery from a known working SPARK SLS or with a new PS-2569 battery.
  4. Return to the SPARK SLS maintenance screen. If the current still reads 0 mA, the SPARK SLS will need to be repaired. E-mail Teacher Support with the serial number of your SPARK SLS.
