Reformat a USB Mass Storage Device

Problem/Symptom:
I need to get my USB Mass Storage Device (FLASH drive, ...) ready for a SPARK SLS firmware update.

PASCO Solution:

Windows (XP, Vista, 7)

  1. Connect the USB Mass Storage Device that you wish to reformat to the host computer.
  2. Open (My) Computer.
  3. Right click on the icon corresponding to the removable USB Drive.
  4. Choose Format from the drop-down menu. (A new window will appear called "Format Removable Disk".)
  5. Under File System choose FAT16. (Make sure the "Quick Format" box is not checked.)
  6. Under Volume Label enter “SPARK” or another short meaningful name.
  7. Click Start.
  8. Windows will inform you that the format action will erase all the data in the flash memory. When you are sure that you have selected the correct drive, click OK.

MacOS (10.x)

  1. Connect the USB Mass Storage Device that you wish to reformat to the computer.
  2. Click the Spotlight (magnifying glass) Icon that appears in the upper right corner of your screen.
  3. Type "disk utility" in the search box.
  4. Once in the Apple disk utility, select your external storage device in the list on the left of the Disk Utility window.
  5. Click erase.
  6. Select FAT as your file format and name the volume.
  7. Click erase.
