Middle School Earth Science Teacher Guide

Legacy Notice: The following collection of experiments utilize older generation PASCO sensors and equipment.

The following list of lab activities are from PASCO's Middle School Earth Science Teacher Guide. You may preview and download editable student handouts as well as the Teacher Guide Introduction, which contains an overview of the activities, a master materials list and safety precautions. Individual materials lists are included within each student handout, and a complete materials list is provided below.

Activities

01) Acid Rain and Weathering

In this lab, students will use a pH sensor to test a simulated acid rain’s reaction with a variety of materials.

02) Exploring Environmental Temperatures

In this lab, students will use a temperature sensor to explore temperatures variations in multiple locations in the environment. Then, they'll organize and compare their information, using tables, to identify temperature patterns.

03) Investigating Evaporation and Condensation

In this lab, students will use a relative humidity sensor to gain an understanding of the water cycle and evaporation.

04) Investigating Seismic Waves

In this lab, students will use a light sensor to measure the amplitude and frequency of vibrations during three simulated earthquakes.

05) Mapping the Ocean Floor

In this lab, students will use a motion sensor to scan a cross-section of a simulated ocean floor terrain.

06) Monitoring Weather

In this lab, students will use a weather sensor to monitor weather outdoors at various times of day for an extended period of time.

07) Night and Day

In this lab, students use a light sensor to measure the light level that falls on a simulated earth's surface as it turns through several rotations.

08) Observing Clouds

In this lab, students will use a weather sensor to measure meteorological conditions over a period of one week or more.

09) Seasons

In this lab, students will use a light sensor to investigate the relationship between the earth's tilt on its axis, its revolution around the sun, and the seasons.

10) Soil Characteristics

In this lab, students will use a pH sensor to investigate the pH of different soil samples.

11) Soil Salinity

In this lab, students will use a conductivity sensor to measure the level of conductivity of various water and soil samples.

12) Water – The Universal Solvent

In this lab, students will use a conductivity sensor to classify substances based on their ability to dissolve in water and measure the changes in the conductivity of water as substances dissolve in it.

13) Water's Role in Climate

In this lab, students will each use two stainless steel temperature sensors to investigate how water and land interact to stabilize temperatures.
