Cell Size

In this lab, students will model the effect of cell size on diffusion using agarose cubes containing a high salt concentration.

Agarose cubes of different sizes are placed in water and a conductivity sensor is used to measure the diffusion of ions into the surrounding water. Students determine how the difference in conductivity relates to the difference in surface-area-to-volume ratios (SA:V) of the cubes. Then, they consider the effect of salt concentration on the rate of diffusion.
