Monitor Water Quality

Lab Summary

Use a water quality sensor, turbidity sensor, and weather/anemometer sensor to monitor the pH, dissolved oxygen content, conductivity, and turbidity of a natural body of water, determining how water quality changes in response to changes in environmental factors.

Theory

Students monitor the quality of a natural body of water in several locations to determine how water quality changes in response to changes in environmental factors. They also:

  • Make measurements that can be reliably compared to measurements made with different equipment or at other times, or both.

Method

Students gain experience conducting the following procedures:

  • Calibrating electronic sensors.
  • Measuring parameters of water quality and interpreting the results.
  • Comparing the results of measuring water quality factors in situ with measurements of water samples removed from the source.

Sensors / Equipment Used:

PASPORT Water Quality Sensor

(PS-2169)

Measures temperature, conductivity, pH/ISE/ORP and dissolved oxygen. It is specifically designed for convenience in conducting water quality lab experiments. For use with PASPORT Interfaces.

PASPORT Turbidity Sensor

(PS-2122)

Measures the turbidity level (cloudiness) of water in nephelometric turbidity units (NTU). For use with PASPORT Interfaces.

PASPORT Weather Anemometer Sensor

(PS-2174)

The Weather Anemometer Sensor measures wind speed and wind chill in addition to temperature, barometric pressure, relative and absolute humidity, and dew point.

PASPORT GPS Position Sensor

(PS-2175)

Collects GPS data simultaneously with other sensor measurements, automatically syncing the data to your latitude, longitude, altitude, and velocity. For use with PASPORT Interfaces.

Materials Used:

Sensor User Guides with calibration instructions and tables - Several
Chemical test kit (optional)
Duct tape, roll
Long-handled sampling device
Scissors
Wading boots (optional) - 1 pair
