(PS-2870C)

Features 25 inquiry based labs covering the fundamental concepts of cell biology, ecology and physiology.

Volume of Breath

Lab Summary

Use a spirometer to explore the pulmonary function test (PFT) and the volume of breath.

Theory

Guide students to explore the pulmonary function test and the volume of breath and to understand the distinction between tidal volume and forced expiratory volume percentage.

Method

Students use a spirometer in an activity that is much like the pulmonary function test:

  • Determine the volume of one normal breath (tidal volume).
  • Determine the forced expiratory volume for 1 second.
  • Determine the maximum amount of air in the lungs (vital capacity).
  • Compare the tidal volume and forced expiratory volume percentage for males and females.

Sensors / Equipment Used:

PASPORT Spirometer

(PS-2152)

Allows students to measure airflow, pressure, duration and lung volume. For use with PASPORT Interfaces.

Spirometer Mouth Pieces

(PS-2522)

Replacement disposable mouthpieces for the PASPORT Spirometer (PS-2152).

Materials Used:

Note:  One Spirometer Mouthpiece (PS-2522) will be needed for each student.

The Associated Bundle:

Physiology Expansion Sensor Bundle

(PS-2935)

This expansion bundle contains the probeware needed to perform the 5 physiology activities in the Biology through Inquiry lab manual.

Interface Required

This experiment may require software and an interface for data collection.
