Ohm's Law & Resistors

Lab Summary

Use a voltage-current sensor to determine how voltage, current, and resistance interact in series and parallel circuits.

Theory

Students are introduced to the concept of equivalent resistance and how voltage V, current I, and resistance R interact in series and parallel circuits.

  • Build foundational knowledge regarding Ohm's law.
  • Establish a fundamental understanding of how resistance values combine when resistors are configured in series and parallel circuit configurations.

Method

Students gain experience conducting the following procedures:

  • Constructing basic series and parallel circuits using three resistors, a variable power supply, a switch, and a voltage/current sensor.
  • Graphing changes in voltage and current to determine the total R of the circuits.

Sensors / Equipment Used:

PASPORT Voltage-Current Sensor

Allows students to safely measure voltage and current simultaneously without overloading the sensor. For use with PASPORT Interfaces.

AC/DC Electronics Laboratory

(EM-8656)

Designed to perform electricity experiments for AC and DC. Can be used as a standalone with a multimeter or with sensors and PASCO software.
