Air Drag

Lab Summary

Compare the terminal velocities for various falling objects to show a relationship between the force of air drag and velocity of the falling object.

Theory

Design and conduct an experiment that compares the terminal velocities for various falling objects.

  • Experimentally show a relationship between the force of air drag and velocity of the falling object.
  • Graph results and derive a linear relationship relating air drag and velocity and verify that the air drag force is proportional to the square of the object's velocity.

Method

Students gain experience conducting the following procedures:

  • Measuring the height necessary to drop different numbers of coffee filters (stacked together) from heights such that they hit the ground at the same time that a single coffee filter dropped from a fixed height does.
