Murray State University Outfits Labs in New Engineering and Physics Building with PASCO Scientific Products to Expand Hands-On Learning Opportunities for Students

Students will use PASCO Wireless Sensors, Smart Carts, 850 Universal Interfaces, Comprehensive Physics Systems, and Capstone software to engage in hands-on experiments that deepen their understanding

With modern classrooms, laboratories, and conference rooms, Murray State University’s (MSU) new $35 million Engineering and Physics Building provides students with state-of-the-art facilities for learning, exploration, and collaboration. To help students apply their learning and gain hands-on experience in physics, MSU’s Physics Department has partnered with PASCO Scientific to outfit physics laboratories in the new 81,000-square-foot building with an array of new, state-of-the-art equipment.

Part of the Institute of Engineering within MSU’s Jesse D. Jones College of Science, Engineering and Technology, the Physics Department has purchased 48 PASCO 850 Universal Interfaces and 24 Comprehensive 850 Physics Systems for the Engineering and Physics Building’s Mechanics Lab and Electricity and Magnetism Lab. In addition, the department will implement PASCO’s award-winning Wireless Sensors, Wireless Smart Carts, and PASCO Capstone™ data collection and analysis software.

“Like most universities, we teach two types of physics courses — calculus-based classes for science and engineering majors, and algebra-based classes. In the past, we did physical labs in our calculus-based classes, but we were working on a shoestring. In our algebra-based classes, we did only virtual labs,” said Professor Matthew Williams, Ph.D. “This semester, with the PASCO products, we’re now able to do hands-on labs in both types of courses. Students say the labs are more challenging but more fun because they can use real physics tools instead of just manipulating an animation onscreen. When students are engaged and they enjoy what they’re doing, they develop a deeper understanding of the material.“

PASCO has been designing, developing, and supporting innovative teaching and learning solutions for K–12 and higher education since 1964. PASCO’s team of educators, scientists, educational researchers, engineers, and many others is committed to the advancement of STEM education around the world. Today teachers and students in more than 100 countries use PASCO solutions.
