Column Buckling and Slenderness Ratio
In this lab, three different lengths of plastic I-beams are tested under compression to investigate their method of failure. The way in which a member fails (buckling or not) is determined by its Slenderness Ratio, which is calculated for each beam. This lab also covers the Radius of Gyration and the Area Moment of Inertia.

Featured Equipment
Comprehensive Materials Testing System
Includes everything needed to do tensile, compression, shear, and bending testing as well as column buckling and photoelasticity.
Structures Beam Fixture
The Structures Beam Fixture allows students to use I-beams from PASCO's Structures System to investigate tension, compression, and bending.
Materials Testing Machine
This is the assembly-only version; measures force and displacement for various materials as the materials are stretched, compressed, sheared, or bent.
Truss Set Members
Spare I-Beams and Connectors for Structures Systems.
Support
Many lab activities can be conducted with our Wireless, PASPORT, or even ScienceWorkshop sensors and equipment. For assistance with substituting compatible instruments, contact PASCO Technical Support. We're here to help.
