Hydromania III: Water Treatment (PS-2811)
Hydromania III: Water Treatment includes:
Engagement Activities
- Water Sleuths
Introduction to the content as well as the tools that will be used to explore water
Exploratory Activities
- Tiny Bubbles
Aeration and the Importance of Dissolved Oxygen in Wastewater Treatment
- Tending the Flocs
The role sedimentation and flocculation play in reducing turbidity the role sedimentation and flocculation play in reducing turbidity
- Operating Filtration
The effects of filtration in reducing turbidity, conductivity, and neutralizing pH
- Disinfection
The importance of disinfecting water to remove bacteria from the water supply
- All Steamed Up
How distillation improves water quality and mimics the hydrologic cycle
Culminating Activity
- Water Treatment Jeopardy
The Game in Which Students Demonstrate Their Knowledge of Water Science
- Junkyard Water Wars
Team Activity to Build a "Water Treatment" Plant
- Quick Round-Up of Labs
Student groups interact to demonstrate their understanding of the water treatment process
Students learn about the various ways water can be treated to make it suitable for human consumption, including flocculation, filtration and disinfection. They’ll also model typical water treatment processes in the classroom and gauge their effectiveness. The activities are designed so that students will relate water quality indicators and water treatment methods to both human health and safety and environmental health.
Hydromania III: Water Treatment includes 3 wall posters that help students visualize the different forms of water treatment and the science behind them. Enlarge image
Student Learning Objectives
This series of lessons has been created to give students an in-depth understanding of water treatment processes. Two primary themes are explored:
- Water exists in varying degrees of quality. In order to be suitable for human use, water must undergo a series of procedures to improve its quality; these processes are collectively referred to as water treatment.
- There are two kinds of water treatment related to human use in general:
- Drinking water treatment and
- Wastewater treatment.
About the Hydromania series
Hydromania explores water science in a four part series:
- Hydromania I: Properties of Water
- Hydromania II: Water Quality
- Hydromania III: Water Treatment
- Hydromania IV: Watershed
The four units could be taught independently. However, the synergy of the four units yields a deeper comprehension of both the fundamental science and social issues of water.
With Hydromania, students will:
- Understand why the unique physical properties of water make it such an important, life-sustaining resource
- Identify factors that affect water quality and in turn learn how water quality determines suitability for various uses
- Model typical water treatment processes and gauge their effectiveness
- Understand that water treatment processes are essential to human life as well as to the ecosystem
- Understand how human activities affect water quality
- Explain water's relationship to the environment at large
PASCO Teacher Resource Kits
Each Teacher Resource Kit (TRK) is a collection of standards-based lessons with an inquiry focus designed to guide students and teachers through progressive exploration of key scientific themes. Each TRK is a combination of written and electronic materials organized to make it easy for you to plan, prepare and guide your students through innovative lessons incorporating sensor technology when and where appropriate.
Here's what you need:
