Every 21st-century biology teacher needs access to devices that enable them to emulate modern 21st century practices in biology. PASCO’s PASPORT® line of data collection systems offers a flexible and affordable system for teaching science with technology.

“Data collection system” refers to the data collection, display, and analysis device used to carry out the 6 biology lab activities. These include computer-based software (SPARKvue™ and DataStudio®) and computer-free devices (SPARK Science Learning System™ and Xplorer GLX®).

Students use powerful onboard graphing and analysis tools to analyze collected data. Activities are designed so that any PASCO data collection system can be used to carry out the procedure. Tech Tips provide the steps on how to use the data collection system.

Biology Lab Activities

PASCO’s biology labs follow the same format as defined by Miller and Levine throughout the textbook. Sections include:  Problem, Introduction, Skills Focus, Materials, Safety, Pre-Lab Questions, Procedure, Organize Data, Analyze and Conclude, and Extended Inquiry. The Student version of the lab is available in print format as well as on the CD in PDF and editable formats. The Teacher version of the lab, in PDF format, includes the answer keys and examples of sensor data that might be collected and displayed in the process of the activity.

  • Featured Experiment: Regulation of Body Heat How does your body respond when one part (in this case one hand) is much colder than the rest?  Are there any changes in blood flow? In this activity, students observe temperature readings as they experience the physiological phenomenon for themselves - and more easily overcome the misconceptions.  They will clearly observe that the hand not in the ice bath experiences a drop in temperature as the body thermoregulates.   All lab activities follow the same familiar format used in the Miller & Levine text.   This activity uses the PS-2143 Quad Temperature Sensor and a pair of the included Fast Response Temperature Probes.
  • Transpiration: Uses the PS-2113A Barometer/Low Pressure Sensor
  • Respiration in Seeds: Uses the PS-2110 Carbon Dioxide Gas Sensor
  • Microclimates: Uses the PS-2143 Quad Temperature Sensor
  • Enzyme Action: Uses the PS-2126 Oxygen Gas Sensor
