Rotary Motion Laboratory

Rotary Motion Laboratory

The Rotary Motion Laboratory is based on the Rotary Motion Sensor.

For Conservation of Momentum, drop ring on disk or drop disk on disk

  • Compact size
  • Includes experiments

Here's What You Need:

Complete Rotational System

The Complete Rotational System has three different ways to conserve angular momentum.

Complete System 1

Experiment 1. Drop ring on disk or drop disk on disk. Enlarge Image

Complete System 2

Experiment 2. Pull a point mass inward. Enlarge Image

Complete System 3

Experiment 3. Shoot a ball into the catcher on the rotating platform. Enlarge Image

Additional Equipment Needed for Experiment 3:

Gyroscope

Gyroscope

Show how angular momentum is conserved including direction:

  • Start with the stool at rest and the bicycle wheel rotating so the angular momentum points up.
  • Turn the bicycle wheel upside down: The stool will rotate so the total angular momentum is still up.

Here's What You Need:

Measure the speed: Add a Photogate Head (ME-9498A) to the base of the Discover Rotation Platform and measure the angular speed with a Smart Timer (ME-8930).
