Conservation of Momentum

Determine the momentum before and after an inelastic collision between two carts.

Students use velocity and mass information in a 2-cart system to see that momentum is conserved.

Lab Summary

Students will use Motion Sensors to investigate the conservation of momentum. Students will measure the velocity of two carts before and after an inelastic collision.

Theory

In an inelastic collision (as in all collisions) the total momentum of the system remains constant.  As the two carts move toward one another, one with (positive velocity and one with negative) this initial momentum will prove the same as the momentum of both carts after they collide and move together as one object.  This fact is confirmed with readings from the Motion Sensors and knowledge of each cart's mass.
