Experimental Setup:

Please note: Upgrade to the latest Xplorer GLX firmware.

Momentum Lab

HARDWARE SETUP:

  1. If necessary, assemble the track.
  2. Attach a Motion Sensor to each end of the track.
  3. Connect the Motion Sensors to the Xplorer GLX.
  4. Make sure the Motion Sensors point parallel to the track.
  5. Top PASPORT Motion
  6. Set the switch on the top of the Motion Sensors to "cart" as shown above
  7. Carefully level the track.

SOFTWARE SETUP:

Note: Download "momentumGLX.zip" (12 KB). DataStudio is necessary to upload this file from your computer to your GLX.

  1. Press the Home Home button button.
  2. Press F4 button to select the Sensors Sensor button Icon.
  3. GLX Screen

  4. Change the Sample Rate to “50” as in the picture above. Make the Position “Not Visible.” Make the velocity “Visible.”
  5. Navigate left Left Arrow button or right Right Arrow buttonand repeat the previous step for the other Motion Sensor.
  6. Press the Home Home button button.
  7. Press F3 button to select the Calculator Calculate button Icon.

  9. Press F4 button and then the number “1” to turn the “Num Lock” off as in the picture above.

  11. Using the keyboard like a cell phone key pad enter the text “vel2=-” as in the picture above.

  13. Then press F2 button and select “Velocity2” as in the picture above.
  14. Press the Check Check button Button to enter the expression.
  15. Press the Home Home button button.
  16. Press F1 button to select the Graph Graph Button Icon.
  17. Press F4 button then the number “4” to select “Two Measurements.”

  19. Press the Check Check button Button then use the arrow buttons to navigate to the “Velocity2” axis label. Select “vel2” as in the picture above.

  21. Once again, press the Check button button then use the arrow buttons to navigate to the “Velocity2” axis label. This time select “Data Properties.” Enter “m/s” into the Measurement unit. Then select “OK.” At this point the graph should be aligned properly for both velocity measurements.
  22. Press the start/stop Play button Button. Move a cart slowly back and forth along the track. Press the start/stop Play button Button (press F1 to autoscale if necessary). Velocities to the right should be positive. If not, switch the Motion Sensors to the other ends.

  24. Use the Check and Arrow Buttons to “Delete All Runs…”
