- Heart Throb
Measuring resting heart rate
- Target Zone
Finding a student's optimal heart rate during exercise
- Heart Fit
Measuring heart rate recovery time after exercise
- Extremity Remedy
Measuring the temperature of various points on the body
Measuring Matters provides nine student investigations in the properties of matter and in basic physiological measurement. This series of standards- and inquiry-based lessons designed to present the scientific principles underlying pH, temperature, and heart rate through a variety of hands-on, minds-on activities
Students use pH, Heart Rate and Temperature Sensors to learn the difference between an acid and a base, how exercise affects your heart rate, why different liquids boil at different temperatures and much more.
Student Learning Objectives
Properties of Matter
- Understand the term "pH" and how it is used to classify a substance as an acid, a base or neutral
- Learn how and why to perform serial dilutions and how dilutions affect the pH of a solution
- Learn that heat is a form of energy
- Understand endothermic and exothermic reactions
- Learn about solid, liquid and gas phases
- Understand how phases change as a result of energy added
Physiology and biofeedback
- Learn how exercise affects heart rate
- Understand that individual heart rates respond dif
PASCO Teacher Resource Kits
Each Teacher Resource Kit (TRK) is a collection of standards-based lessons with an inquiry focus designed to guide students and teachers through progressive exploration of key scientific themes. Each TRK is a combination of written and electronic materials organized to make it easy for you to plan, prepare and guide your students through innovative lessons incorporating sensor technology when and where appropriate.
Electronic workbooks guide student groups through 9 hands-on activities - providing setup instructions, prompting predictions, automatically integrating data collection, guiding analysis and finally asking synthesis questions to pull it all together.
Here's what you need:
Measuring Matters Teacher Resource Kit (PS-2800)
This curricular unit provides a series of 9 standards-based covering properties of matter and human physiology. Provides lesson planning information, teacher and student background materials, classroom posters, plus Electronic Workbooks which guide students through probeware-based activities.
We recommend one Teacher Resource Kit per classroom.
