Give Students the sense of discovery

  • Fun and meaningful hands-on investigations
  • Explore temperature, light and sound

The Teaching Challenge

Students explore the world around them by comparing measurements to their own senses with the Temperature/Light/Sound sensor. Compare the feeling of temperature with the result of a measurement while investigating still air, moving air, and water temperatures. Compare what a light sensor detects to what the eye sees and explore how animal eyes vary according to their needs for finding food and avoiding predators. Students explore the characteristics of common sounds, such as loudness, pitch, and sound quality. Students will build a musical instrument to understand how sound is produced by vibrating things.

The PASCO Solution

Students investigate driving questions such as:
How does a greenhouse work?
Can you believe your senses?
How do animals' senses help them survive?
How do we make sounds and hear sounds?

Students constructing musical instruments
Students construct simple musical instruments to understand the concept of sound creation ... then measure sound with Temperature/Sound/Light Sensor.

About SensorScience Units

PASCO's SensorScience line of activities is designed for elementary school students.

These activities guide younger students through fun and meaningful investigations about the world around them.

The activities encourage students to ask a question, make a prediction, gather data and construct an explanation. The Teacher section for each activity offers background information and a discussion guide.

All activities have been designed to meet national science standards.
