Directly experience key sound and light concepts
- » Hear and feel sound while you "see" it
- » Understand light by manipulating it
Wondering About Waves Teacher Resource Kit (PS-2802)
Wondering About Waves Investigations Include:
Sound
- Seeing Sound
Recognize and manipulate the parts of a wave
- Tone Zones
Visually and audibly learn how changing amplitude, wavelength and frequency affects a wave
- Ouch -- It Hertz!
Understand frequency as "cycles per second" or hertz
Light
- Where in the World is Roy G. Biv?
Learn that white light is a combination of colors
- Refraction Action
Understand the concept of light wave refraction
- You Bend Your Way I'll Bend Mine
Study concave and convex lenses
PASCO's Wondering About Waves Teacher Resource Kit is an inquiry into the everyday phenomena of sound and light.
Students study and manipulate sound waves using WAVEPORT software. WAVEPORT allows students to manipulate attributes of wave properties such as amplitude and frequency, allowing them to see the impact of their actions and to hear them. Students also use a light box to reveal the colors of the visible spectrum and study the ray behavior of light. Six investigations into light and sound provide approximately 18 days of classroom activities.
WAVEPORT software provides an interactive learning tool for students -- allowing them to see and manipulate all aspects of sound waves and hear the results. WAVEPORT was honored by District Administration magazine as a Top 100 education product.

PASCO Teacher Resource Kits
Each Teacher Resource Kit (TRK) is a collection of standards-based lessons with an inquiry focus designed to guide students and teachers through progressive exploration of key scientific themes. Each TRK is a combination of written and electronic materials organized to make it easy for you to plan, prepare and guide your students through innovative lessons incorporating sensor technology when and where appropriate.

The Wondering about Waves Teacher Resource Kit contains two wall charts that support the teaching and learning of sound. A One-Second Time Line, which dramatically reveals the concept of frequency and, specifically, the unit hertz (cycles/second). The Frequency Spectrum of Light, shown here, displays light waves ranging from radio to gamma rays with a magnified section of the visible spectrum. The two charts explicitly and intuitively link the concepts of energy, wavelength, and frequency.
Electronic workbooks guide student groups through 6 hands-on activities. For sound wave studies, students see and manipulate the sound waves directly in the electronic workbooks.
Here's what you need:
Wondering About Waves Teacher's Resource Kit (PS-2802)
This curricular unit provides a focus on light and sound. Includes lesson planning information, teacher and student background materials, classroom posters, plus Electronic Workbooks which guide students through inquiry-based activities.
We recommend one Teacher Resource Kit per classroom.
Wondering About Waves Bundle (PS-2703)
The bundle includes the equipment needed to study light and sound. To grasp intangible phenomena such as light and sound waves, students need visual connections. Using WAVEPORT, students will directly manipulate sound waves. The light box will reveal the colors of the visible spectrum and provide an understanding of the behavior of light rays.
Includes:
- WAVEPORT Software
- Light Box
- Ray Optics Kit
- Equilateral Prism
- DataStudio Lite and EZscreen software
We recommend one bundle per computer/lab station of 3-4 students.
Wondering About Waves Accessory Kit (PS-2503A)
The kit is designed to provide key classroom materials to supplement Light and Sound lessons. Includes the Chimes (pure tones) and a USB microphone required to perform the student investigations. Purchase an accessory kit if you don't already have these materials at your disposal.
We recommend one kit for each bundle.
