Description

My World GIS is the Geographic Information System (GIS) designed for students, featuring intuitive navigation and drag-and-drop layering. Based on more than a decade of research, My World GIS provides the functionality of a full-featured GIS with the ease-of-use required by students and the ease-of-administration critical to schools.

My World GIS was developed by the Geographic Data in Education (GEODE) Initiative at Northwestern University with the support of the National Science Foundation. Designed specifically for use by middle school through college students, it provides a carefully selected, high-value subset of the features of a professional GIS environment, including multiple geographic projections, table and map views of data, distance-measurement tools, buffering and query operations and customizable map displays.

My World GIS comes with a data library of over 50 data sets including country population data, climate, elevation, earthquake and volcano activity. In addition, My World can import data from the industry-standard shapefile format, as well as from tab and comma-delimited text files.

Who should be using My World GIS

A Geographic Information System (GIS) is a powerful mapping tool that provides visual representation of data as it relates to geography. Students "see" the relationship between data and the world, increasing comprehension of complex concepts.

My World's intended audience is middle school through college geosciences and geography.  It can be an invaluable tool for studying geographic data as it relates to Earth Science, geology, cultural or physical anthropology or even history and political science.  With a supportive interface and multiple geographic projections, complex situations can be presented to students without fear of overwhelming them.

Classroom activities for My World GIS are now available for middle school through high school ranging from a 2 day investigation to a year long environmental science course.

From global weather conditions to investigations of a local freeway interchange, My World GIS has the flexibility you need.

Accessing WeatherBug Data in My World GIS

ArcIMS and Web Map Servers (WMS) provide dynamic images and data for use in My World GIS.  In partnership with WeatherBug, My World can access real time satellite radar imagery and point data through ArcIMS and WMS servers.  These servers will allow students and teachers to visualize and analyze live weather data across the world.

WeatherBug Point Data Project File

The WeatherBug Point Data project file shows real-time point data for a number of weather parameters, including temperature, daily rainfall, wind direction, and much more.

The WeatherBug Weather Point Data project file will open with its focus on North America.  Use the Zoom Out Tool to see the data available for the rest of the globe.

WeatherBug WMS Project File

The WeatherBug WMS project file is capable of showing a number of weather parameters as a dynamic web image that refreshes constantly to provide most up-to-date weather data.

Changing the settings for the WeatherBug WMS layer is easy!  Highlight the layer by clicking on it.  Then, from the Layer menu, select Edit Layer Information.  The WMS Settings tab allows you to change the data shown on the map by checking or unchecking any of the available weather parameters.  Simply click Apply when you are done to see the new data on the map.
