Mapping Environmental Data
Use the Xplorer GLX, GPS Position Sensor and the Weather/Anemometer to measure a local environment. Display digital readings of position data with your other measurements on the Xplorer GLX, or even graph latitude and longitude to track your movement.
Many times, the value of your data depends on its location.
PASCO provides a simple way to collect and map environmental data. Environmental data often has much more meaning when it associated directly with its place on a satellite photo, topographical map or even roadmaps.
Simple collect your data with PASPORT Sensors and our GPS Position Sensor. Open your data in My World GIS, and you have the option to automatically connect and download maps and satellite photos from TerraServer USA. Mapping your collected data has never been this simple. You also have the option to load maps and images from many other sources.

Here's what you need:
PASPORT Weather/Anemometer Sensor (PS-2174)
The PASPORT Weather/Anemometer is just one of PASCO's MultiMeasure Sensors, providing you with several measurements in one convenient and economical sensor box. Measure wind speed, wind gusts, wind chill and humidity index, along with temperature, barometric pressure, relative and absolute humidity, and dew point. For additional environmental measurements, see our complete offering of more than 60 PASPORT sensors.
GPS Position Sensor (PS-2175)
The GPS Position sensor uses satellite triangulation to determine the sensor's position and velocity in outdoor environments. The highly sensitive receiver is able to track satellites even under tree canopies often found along rivers. All your data is automatically tied to its GPS location (latitude, longitude, and altitude).
Xplorer GLX (PS-2002)
Tie it all together with the Xplorer GLX, the award-winning portable graphing datalogger from PASCO. Collect, display and analyze your data right on the unit. Designed for effective use outdoors, the LCD display uses transflective technology for easy visibility even in bright sunlight conditions.
My World GIS
Open your data in My World GIS, and you have the option to automatically connect and download maps and satellite photos from TerraServer USA. Mapping your collected data has never been this simple. You also have the option to load maps and images from many other sources. This GIS is designed for use in education, featuring drag-and-drop simplicity.
Large-Scale Motion
Car acceleration, velocity and position data plotted on an aerial photo in My World GIS. The size of the plotted data point indicates the speed of the car, and the more red the color, the greater the centripetal acceleration. Enlarge image.
Analyze large-scale motion and energy of real-world objects
- Cars
- Roller coasters
- Skydivers
- Skiers
- Boats
In the graph to the right, car acceleration was measured with an Acceleration Sensor, and position and velocity were measured simultaneously with the GPS Position Sensor—giving the acceleration data a spatial context. The dataset was opened in My World GIS, which has a built-in connection to TerraServer for retrieval of aerial images. The result: collected data is plotted automatically on maps and aerial photos for better understanding the context of the object in motion.
Collected data can also be viewed in DataStudio for further analysis. The top graph displays centripetal acceleration and the lower graph vehicle speed. Enlarge image
Here's what you need:
GPS Position Sensor (PS-2175)
The GPS Position Sensor means the data you collect is automatically associated with a position on Earth. The sensor offers two modes for position data.
Absolute Position Mode: Pinpoints your location in the world and reports the latitude and longitude within a resolution of 2 meters. Then this data can be imported into My World GIS software to overlay all your sensor data on maps
or aerial photos.
Relative Position Mode: This special mode enables a higher resolution (0.2 meters) suitable for physics experiments involving bicycles or people running or walking. This mode is used for motion experiments in which the position in the world is not required.
The GPS Position Sensor also provides velocity data-- obtained via Doppler from the satellites, not by calculation on the position data.
3-Axis Acceleration/Altimeter Sensor (PS-2136)
The 3-Axis Acceleration/Altimeter is designed specifically for large-scale motion measurement. This unit measures acceleration along x, y, and z axes, plus calculates the resultant acceleration. Collected simultaneously with the acceleration data is altitude -- with 30 cm resolution. So all acceleration data can be viewed relative to altitude changes. Perfect for roller coasters and other large-scale motion activities.
Xplorer GLX (PS-2002)
Provides convenient and powerful data collection and analysis -- even without a computer. Includes 2 temperature sensors, voltage sensor, built-in speaker and sound sensor. Data collection is completely portable -- in a lab or in the field. And data is easily transferred via USB Flash Drive for lab write-ups at home or in the computer lab.
