Absolute Zero Apparatus

Empirically determine absolute zero

Constant volume gas thermometer

  • » Study gas laws and determine absolute zero
  • » Electronically measure pressure and temperature
  • » Display data in real-time

Absolute Zero Sphere  (TD-8595)

Graph 1

Temperature and Pressure Data for two samples of different volumes of gas in the sphere. While slopes are different, both extrapolate to a similar value for absolute zero. Enlarge image.

The Absolute Zero Sphere is immersed in three water baths of different temperatures and the pressure and temperature of the gas is electronically recorded. The experiment is repeated with a different amount of gas initially in the sphere.

Once the data is collected, students can use a linear fit to extrapolate the value of absolute zero. The two graphs will have different slopes as the number of moles of gas in the samples varied; however both graphs will extrapolate to an approximation of absolute zero.

PASCO provides the tools

The unique PASCO design of the Absolute Zero Sphere combined with PASPORT Sensors means your students get high-quality real-time data and you use lab time more effectively.

  • Fast Response Temperature thermistor embedded in sphere
  • Easy-connect pressure port

Your students will watch gas pressure inside the sphere as it comes to equilibrium -- observing the pressure vs temperature relationship in real-time.

Absolute Zero Sphere (TD-8595)

The Absolute Zero Sphere is a hollow copper sphere with an integrated Fast Response Temperature Probe and plastic tubing and
quick-connect pressure port for easy use with a PASCO Pressure Sensor. The Fast Response Probe has a very low thermal mass for almost instantaneous capture of temperature changes, and connects to PASPORT Temperature Sensors.

Absolute Pressure/Temp
Absolute Pressure/Temperature Sensor (PS-2146)

This MultiMeasure Sensor is two sensors in one, providing high resolution Absolute Pressure and Temperature data -- ideal for use with the Absolute Zero Sphere and Gas Law studies.

Xplorer GLX
Xplorer GLX (PS-2002)

Provides convenient and powerful data collection and analysis -- even without a computer. Includes 2 temperature sensors, voltage sensor, built-in speaker and sound sensor. Print results directly to a computer or download to a USB Flash Drive for later analysis or lab write-up. A great value for any lab. When connected to a computer, the Xplorer GLX functions as an interface for up to 4 PASPORT Sensors. If you will be doing all your labs with computers, you may also consider the PowerLink or USB Links.
