Geosphere: Soil Salinity

Measure the conductivity of several soil samples to determine the salinity of the soil. In addition, assess each sample and describe the type of crop it might sustain, if any.

Lab Summary:

In this exploration, students will complete the second of a three-experiment series studying soil quality.

In this particular exploration, they will use the Conductivity Sensor to measure the salinity of locally-collected soil samples using a standard procedure to measure electrical conductivity.

Students will demonstrate the disparities in soil salinity by taking samples in diverse locations and predict whether their soil could support common agricultural crops. In addition, students will propose suggestions to correct adverse salinity levels to yield soil that will support productive crops.
