Geosphere: Properties of Soil

Will a plant grow here or not? Many physical characteristics of soil affect its productivity. This activity helps students understand the variability of soil in terms of its physical properties.

Soil Properties Graphs

Using the Turbidity Sensor, students can assess differences in soil properties. Since clay does not "settle out", the turbidity remains high. Students can quickly differentiate the components of soil.

Lab Summary:

Many physical characteristics of soil affect its productivity. Soil scientists evaluate soil along several parameters to assess soil health and composition. In this exploration, students will use a turbidity sensor and general laboratory procedures and observations to investigate several properties of soil, including air space, texture, density, moisture, and porosity.
